Enables international students to study and work in Canada legally.

Canadian Study Permits / Visas

Canada ranks third on a global level for its foreign student population with 642,000 international students currently studying at its colleges and universities. The country has tripled its international student population during the 2010-2020 period.

The international cohort acts as a financial revenue stream for the country’s colleges and universities and as a skilled worker population when the students apply for permanent residence. Up to 27% of international students become permanent residents within the first decade after acquiring their study permits.

Study Permits

Student immigrants are a highly desirable acquisition for the Canadian authorities. As a result, study permits are available for foreign nationals.

Study permits are documents that allow foreign students to enroll at designated learning institutions (DLI). The foreign students must apply to the required institutes and gain admission before they apply to travel to Canada.

The study permit needs an accompanying visitor visa application or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). The immigration authorities will automatically issue an eTA or a visitor visa with a study permit if the application is approved.

Students can choose to study at different levels in Canada including colleges, universities, private career colleges, and vocational/technical schools. Only the institutions in the DLI list are eligible for study permit application. However, not all post-secondary schools are on the DLI list. The aspiring students must check if their school is on the DLI list before applying for their program or their study permit.

Primary and secondary schools from grades 1-8 and 9-12 respectively can admit international students; however, there are separate regulations for minors in Canada that parents must check before sending their children for foreign study programs.

Post-secondary schools are also open for international applicants and include colleges, universities, private career colleges, and vocational and technical schools.

Study permits require a set of documents for immigration processing. To the minimum, these include a valid passport or travel document, an acceptance letter from the designated learning institution, and proof of funds to verify that you can support yourself financially.

All international students need to apply six months in advance for primary or secondary schools and a year in advance for post-secondary schools. The students should pre-emptively research and check the requirements for tuition, application fee, living expenses, approved language test fees, and health insurance.

Once students graduate from a Canadian institution, dependent on their profiles, they might be qualified to apply for PR under Express Entry or PNP programs.
